Where is the down-arrow select character trick documented?

Apparently, most of my problems with #210: How to configure Chinese input (chewing ibus)?
started with not knowing how to bring up the character selection window with the down arrow.
Where is it documented?
Can it be configured in such a way that the character selection window is always displayed, by default?

The documentation should be embedded (in Chinese and English) with the application. How is a user to know they have to go there??
