Changing monitor: adjusting xconf

Description

I have a computer with Kubuntu already installed. It used an old-style CRT monitor which died. I have a new LCD monitor to replace it.
Obviously, the X settings are not properly adjusted and Linux won't boot to the graphical prompt.

What procedure should I follow to update X conf? What settings to adjust.

I am impressed. It used to be that changing a monitor screwed everything up. I was expecting to have to boot with a live CD and change a configuration file manually. But on a hunch I still tried booting without doing anything and everything worked perfectly.

What has changed?

In any case, I am really pleasantly surprised.
