Description

I have a UMAX Astra 1200S scanner which is supposed to be a scsi scanner supported by SANE
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-backends.html#S-UMAX

My first problem is that I am not sure how it is supposed to be connected to the computer. The plug fits in what I believe is the parallel port of the computer. I don't know what difference, if any, there is between a parallel port and a scsi port. Wikipedia was not very enlightening in that respect.

However, if found this:
2.8. Parallel Port Scanners
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Scanner-HOWTO/interfaces.html#PARPORT-GENERAL
Now I need to understand what they say and what to do with it....

http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-find-scanner.1.html
I used sane-find-scanner but it says that scanners connected to the parallel port are not detected:

# sane-find-scanner

# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

# No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup
# the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details.

# Not checking for parallel port scanners.

# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.
