# eix-update

Building database (/var/cache/eix/portage.eix)...

Writing database file /var/cache/eix/portage.eix...
error while writing to database
There are two possible problems:
1) a permission problem.
Try:
# chown -R portage:portage /var/cache/eix/
2) a disk space problem.
If your disk is full, you will have the same symptoms as above.
Check: the output of:
df -h /
