Note that for software that require older versions of openssl, there is another package called: dev-libs/openssl-compat
If required, simply emerge the appropriate slot of openssl-compat.
It is not clear why the Gentoo developers decided to create a separate package, instead of simply slotting dev-libs/openssl appropriately. If you know the proper technical reason, you may add an explanation here.
