USE=-pulseaudio : audio will not play without pulseaudio installed
ALSA support removed
In Firefox release 52, Mozilla disabled ALSA support by default and made Firefox default to Pulseaudio.
Bug 1247056: Require PulseAudio to play sound on Linux: status = "FIXED".- Bug 1221579: Write a full-duplex ALSA cubeb backend status = NEW. "Supporting ALSA is not on the roadmap."
- Bug 1345661: PulseAudio requirement breaks Firefox on ALSA-only systems: status = NEW, but a clear "WON'T FIX" communicated by the developers.
- Discussion: Rationalising Linux audio backend support.
- Gentoo:
Bug 613370 - www-client/firefox-52 should enable alsa by default: status = FIXED.
Within Gentoo, in an ALSA-only system (i.e. with the flag -pulseaudio), sound will not work in the pre-compiled binaries (www-client/firefox-bin) but it will work is you compile the full package yourself (www-client/firefox).
