POP3 with maildir local storage

An alternative route may be to set up your own IMAP server reading from a local Maildir storage, so that you are then free to easily switch to any of the very numerous mail client supporting IMAP.
Large number of emails
For a very large number of emails notmuch and its frontend alot may be more appropriate.
